30 Days of Night Vamps vs. Government Response

Just watched 30 Days of Night for the second time and thought up a fun little "what-if" situation. Basically, we take the first movie and say that the citizens of Barrow managed to get a distress call out to a nearby town. Alaska State Troopers decide to respond and investigate once the transmissions mysteriously stop.

Meanwhile, the very same aluminum foil dragon that wiped out the mole-person planet appears (brownie points to whoever gets the reference) and decides to watch the action.

Assume that the weather isn't so restrictive that it prevents rescue forces from reaching Barrow in a timely fashion. In addition, to make this a little more fun, assume that the number of vampires in this scenario is at least twice as large as that which was shown in the film.

In addition, the vampires cannot escape the town due to a spell cast by the aforementioned aluminum foil dragon. They are trapped for the duration of the thirty days; any vamps that are still around by the time the sun rises manage to escape.

This is basically a fun little scenario to see what would happen if the vampires suddenly became the hunted, with only a darkened town to hide in. What is the minimum necessary response from the government to wipe out all the creatures? Will any manage to survive the duration?

Also, be reasonable when considering the military response. No, the President won't simply authorize a nuclear strike or carpet bombing of the entire town. The response will be "scaled", starting at low-level neighboring authorities and becoming more serious as needed. In other words, it'll start with Alaska State Troopers and scale upwards, with SERT, the Alaska State Defense Force, as well as the Alaska Army and Air National Guard getting involved as time goes on. Limited federal assistance will also become available, mostly in the form of federal law enforcement (namely FBI Special Agents, SWAT, and the Hostage Rescue Team) and FEMA. The regular military will not become involved until the final few days of the scenario, at which point conventional forces from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson will arrive. In addition, the Joint Special Operations Command will lend support in the form of operators from the Army Compartmented Element (Delta Force), Navy Special Warfare Development Group/SEAL Team Six, and the Air Force 24th Special Tactics Squadron, with air support provided by the 160th SOAR/Nightstalkers.

P.S.: And no, the aluminum foil dragon is (unfortunately) not actually a serious part of the scenario. The vampires ARE, however, restricted to the town and its surrounding radius.

Could you provide some info on these vampires?

Sure. They're many times faster and stronger than the average human. They can leap to the top of a one-story building and run fast enough to catch an SUV moving at a reasonable speed. A few of them were capable of lifting said SUV into the air. A newly-turned vamp managed to shove his fist cleanly through a person's head.

As for how they can be killed, destruction of the brain/decapitation and sunlight are the only two surefire methods. I think explosives and incineration also work. Bullets to the chest aren't lethal but can temporarily slow them down, knock them over, or incapacitate them.

Not entirely sure; I don't think the film or books ever give a count. I'll just say around fifty, give or take.

EDIT: Change this to at least a hundred, if not more.

So we are talking about vampires who are six times faster than any world class human athlete, six times stronger than any world class human athlete...

Are we also counting the Deadliest Warrior factor? Cause they did use the 30 Days of Night Vampires.

The State Police, even the Alaskan Police (which is a hardcore group), is no match for these Vamps.

Nah, the government needs to call in the IRS. I doubt the vampires have kept decent records or any receipts. Death by taxes!

Probably a decent baseline to use, yeah. Not exactly consistent with what is seen throughout both films, but it's good enough for our purposes.

Prepare to be audited, vampire scum.
