JohnnyChany Posted April 6, 2012 Share Posted April 6, 2012 Shayera flew over the quiet island town of Lindenblum trying to clear her head. It wasn’t working. The voices in Shayera’s head would not go away. Echoes of comments made by other members of the Justice League gnawed at her all her all the time. There were the during a chess game at Dr. Fate’s residence during her time away from the League. Even after she rejoined the superhero collective, everyone thought there was something off about her. She thought about the time she, along with Vixen, Black Canary, and Huntress, at Roulette’s Club. Months after the incident, Shayera overheard Huntress telling other Leaguers that she couldn’t believe how scared and timid Shayera appeared at the possibility of fighting Diana, how that couldn’t be the Hawkgirl she had heard so much about. There were many other instances that constantly passed through her mind, but they all had the same theme. The belief that Shayera had gone soft. The thought that the ripples caused from the Thanagarian invasion of Earth, and , had broken her fighting spirit and destroyed her confidence. Maybe they were right. The invasion had definitely changed her. She could not even bring herself to wear her old Hawgirl outfit. What was the point? It was Thanagarian armor, the same armor worn by the army that had banished her from her home world. It was a look now despised all over the Earth because of what it symbolized. Shayera also knew her demeanor had changed. She no longer carried herself with the brash bravado she once did. She no longer went searching for a fight wherever she could find it. But, did all this mean she had somehow become a less effective warrior? Shayera could not be sure. Shayera’s thoughts were interrupted as the sky suddenly went dark. “What the?†said Shayera. . As it hovered over the land, a large energy ball formed in its mouth. The energy ball erupted from the dragon’s mouth and hurled itself into Lindenblum, scorching half the city instantaneously. “No... no way...†Shayera tapped the communicator in her ear. “J’onn? J’onn, come in, did you get that?†“Yes,†replied the Martian Manhunter from the Watchtower. “Mystical activity has suddenly spiked at your location.†“No kidding. This gigantic flying lizard just wiped out half the city with one shot. I have no idea where it came from. It just appeared. You should see the size of it, J’onn. I don’t undestand how I couldn’t see this monster coming.†“Sensors indicate that the creature you are seeing now was not there moments ago,†said J’onn. “So it just appeared out of then air? How is that possible?†asked Shayera. “It looks to be a creature composed completely of magical energy,†J’onn answered. “So this thing was summoned into existence by some wizard or something?†said Shayera. “That would seem to be the most logical explanation,†replied J’onn. “Although I am not detecting any magic users with that kind of power in your area.†“Wherever it came from it needs to be stopped,†Shayera declared. “There aren’t any League reinforcements available at this time,†J’onn said sadly. “Save as many people as you can until I can get you some assistance.†“Did you not hear me before, J’onn. This monster wiped out half the city with one blast. We don’t have that much time.†“I certainly hope you are not considering engaging the monster by yourself,†said J’onn. “You said it was made from magic, right? I think my magic disrupting mace is the best weapon we will have to fight this beast.†“That may very well be true, but one miscalculation or ill timed hesitation in fighting this monster will get you eviscerated,†warned J’onn. “I’m aware of the risks, J’onn.†The Martian Manhunter’s tone softened as the next few sentences exited his lips. “Shayera, I know what you have been going through. I know about your internal struggles. You don’t need to do this to prove your worth. You are a valued member of this team.†“I’m not trying to prove anything,†Shayera insisted. “I’m trying to save people. It’s what we do.†“Shayera...†Shayera watched the dragon as it began to circle over the city again, oblivious to the screams below. “It looks like it might strike again I have to move.
