I've seen a lot of horror films in my time and tend to lump them together in these broad categories. What is your favourite horror genre and why? Annoyingly, the Cube series which I love doesn't quite fit in to any of these categories)

Also curious about how you view and compare horror genres and if there are any genres I've missed (feel free to add a film to exemplify the genre).

I'll watch something different from time to time, but I seem to have some fascination with the dead returning to life. From movies, to the Walking Dead TV series, to some of the Manga series I read recently, I like 'em all.

And to be honest, I think that is the one horror genre that has really stood the test of time. By that I mean that they have tried various types of zombies such as running or intelligent zombies, but the apocalyptic "shufflers" seem to be the one we will always return to.

I have to say that I don't think there has been a decent Slasher Horror in a while (not counting sequels) - in that the actual characters don't seem to have the same punch the old ones did. Thinking primarily of the Sinister Six: Jason, Freddy, Myers, Chucky, Leatherface and Pinhead (and my favorite outsider: Wishmaster).

Hellraiser series probably my overall favorite. Nightmare on Elm Street has some good films.. Candyman, uh Pet Cemetery.. can't think of very many good horror movies to tell the truth.

I like ones that are actually good. The Ruins, pretty good. Lake Placid, fun to watch, but come on.

I guess I'll say Zombie Horror, just because of 28 Days/Weeks Later and just an overall liking of zombies.

Also, Quarantine? Zombie Horror? Really? When the hell did rabies turn you into a zombie?

Well, if you want to get technical like that, then 28 days later is also not a zombie movie.

I figure 28 Days/Weeks fits way more into the zombie genre. Did Quarantine feel like a zombie movie to you?

Well, when you've had body parts somewhat eaten, you tend to be a little less mobile. :P

True. The only Slasher movies that I liked quite a bit were the Scream series, and the I Know What You Did Last Summer yarns. BEFORE they made that terrible third entry. I liked those two movie lines, because the murderer wasn't unkillable. Then they made that piece of trash. <_<

My favorite horror is slasher films with my top favorites being the Scream series and the original Halloween movies. Next for sure is Zombie movies like the Dawn of the Dead remake which was excellent, 28 Days Later, the first Resident Evil movie, and others. Third is Vampires with great movies like Underworld, Blade, John Carpenter's Vampires, Let Me In, Daybreakers, and more.

The Alien movies for me are more Sci Fi. The same thing goes for the Predator films in a way but the Predator films are a mixed bag of genres.

No. Neither did 28 Days/Weeks. In fact, both Quarantine and 28 have more in common with each other than traditional zombie movies. Neither had slow moving dead people craving for human flesh. Both had alive raging maniacs trying to kill the non-infected. Granted, one was stuck inside an apartment building while the other ravaged Britain but...still. Rabies or Rage virus, they are infected, not zombified.

EDIT: Now that I come to think of it...didn't Quarantine have a chemical lab break in and someone stole a virus or something? That's another similarity right there.

I don't remember that EDIT part, but you've proven your part. Quarantine still doesn't strike me as zombies at all, while 28 Days/Weeks did.

Also, Let Me In is my favorite horror movie ever. It's not scary in the slightest, but just the overwhelming darkness is awesome.

And that's totally fine. Different people see things differently.

I haven't even seen that movie yet, need to put that on to-do list.

On a side note...my favorite scary movie is Jeepers Creepers. Nowadays when I watch it, it isn't nearly as scary but back in '01 when I first watched it...it was terrifying. It was so frightening, it has just stuck with me all these years. Nine year old watching that movie...explains why I'm so screwed up. Heh.

OK... quick question to the participants: do you think the following would benefit this poll as a horror genre:

- Vampire Horror (Let the Right One In, Lost Boys, Dracula, Nosferatu, etc)
