Match 12570 Test Character Zero vs. The Fire Nation

Avatar Roku stared blindly at the Fire Nation flag hanging over the larger one of the Earth Kingdom. He seethed in anger, remembering the advice he had given Sozin years prior which had been ignored. His mind wandered farther...back to the simple times when life was so easy...with the friend he considered a brother.

Once I called you brother, once I thought the chance to make you laugh was all I ever wanted...

Roku stood resolute in front of the Fire Palace door, before blowing it open with a powerful display of airbending. "SOZIN!" he yelled.

Sitting on his throne, the Fire Lord gave no sign of paying attention. "It is customary for my subjects to bow to their Lord." he replied.

"Don't play games Sozin. I told you not to extend our boundaries, to keep the nations separate as they should. If you continue down this path...I will be forced to step in and end it. Don't make me do it." Roku remarked as he turned around and walked off.

Angered by the lack of respect, the Fire Lord unleashed a massive flame on Roku's retreating back. When the fire cleared, Roku had disappeared. Sozin glanced around before turning to see Roku earthbend out of the ground. Before Sozin could react, he was blasted by air into the wall and a column of earth rose and pinned his robe to the roof.

Roku rose up to Sozin. "Out of our past friendship, I will leave you with this warning. Don't expand any farther. If you do...I will end you. Permanently.

And even now I wish that the spirits had chose another, serving as your foe on their behalf is the last thing that I wanted...

Sozin spent the next day deciding whether or not to heed Roku's warning, before deciding not to. Sozin believed that the result, a unified powerful nation...would be worth the cost. He continued his expansion very slowly, very secretly. A Earth kingdom town here, a water tribe village there. This continued for years...and even Roku was unaware of it.

As time passed, Sozin grew more bold, more arrogant. At long last, he set his sights on an Air Temple. His fleets and armies moved in...but the airbenders had seen their coming a long ways off and had fled on their bison and staffs. They spread in all directions and soon the world was abuzz with their stories. Roku finally was aware. His...reaction was less than cordial.

Roku had cornered Sozin inside his palace, laying it under siege with the Avatar state. The sky was covered with dark clouds, it rained earth covered by fire, the wind was blasting hard. Glancing around, Roku frowned, shaking his head at the terrible but necessary actions.

This was my home, all this pain and devastation how it tortures me inside, all the innocent who suffer from your stubbornness and pride...

Sozin remained steadfast within his castle, well provisioned and safe. He was confident that Roku would tire soon and more over, his personal guards the YuYan archers were coming along with some chi-blockers from the local circus. It would be over soon.

Roku spent the next few days watching his siege rain down on the castle at various places, without even sleeping. He was beginning to wonder when this would end...how long it would take Sozin to--"Aahhhhhhh!" he yelled in pain as the arrow grazed the side of his torso. He immediately froze the opening of the wound, before turning and spotting the YuYan archers atop a nearby plateau. They all fired at once, however Roku blocked the projectiles with a solid wall of earth before sending it their way. They scattered, lots of them dying from the impact or the fall.

"The Fire Lord's bodyguards...of course."

You who I called brother, why must you call down another blow?

Sozin watched impassively from his window as the archers had begun to attack Roku, before he responded in kind with earthbending. Roku's counterattack left most of Sozin's force dead. He frowned and stared at Roku, who sensed the glance and stated back. Their eyes looked deep, like they were trying to stare into each other's souls. Sozin was angry. That much was clear.

You who I called brother, how could you have come to hate me so? Is this what you wanted?

At that moment a surviving chi-blocker made his surprise attack on Roku, jabbing him quickly to disable Roku's bending. It worked...partially, but Roku made use of his last bending style, incinerating the man completely.

Sozin smirked, aware that Roku was weakened. He believed himself capable of beating the Avatar. He removed his heavy armor to be quicker and launched himself into the air with a quick firejet. He landed on his dragon and headed to his old friend, preparing to fire a large blast.

Then let my heart be hardened and never mind how high the cost may grow, this will still be so, I will never let those nations go...

As Sozin neared, his dragon was slammed aside by Fang, Roku's dragon. As the pair of animals fought, Sozin leapt off and flew towards Roku, firing a huge plume of flame. Roku blasted it aside with a blast of fire of his own.

The two old friends stared at each other from a distance as the smoke cleared.

"Sozin...as your friend I beg of you...don't do this, please." Roku pleaded.

Sozin glanced down briefly...before setting an iron stare on Roku. "I'm sorry...old friend...brother...but without you, all my dreams are possible."

Both nodded at each other in sorrow, in understanding. There was only one end to this day...only one end to this lifelong friendship...only one end. An Agni Kai.

Quick notes: Test Character Zero represents Roku, Fire Nation represents Sozin. Roku is only capable of using firebending right now.

Yeah just came up with this as I was watching Avatar The Last Airbender and Prince of Egypt at the same time, then drew parallels between both. There are a few pairings in the show that would work pretty good with the conflict and song lyrics(such as Iroh/Ozai, Zuko/Azula) but I decided Roku/Sozin worked best. Heh...gotta love that many of the troubled relationships between best friends or siblings are from the Fire Nation. Anyways, leave a comment, rate the match if you want or don't if you want. Whichever floats your boat. Hope some of you enjoyed. Even if none of you enjoy reading it, that's fine. I enjoyed writing it. Eh, I'm rambling now. Shut up self.

Dude, nice set up. I thought, at first, that the recap element would be repetitive... but you worded it so nicely, it merely reminded me how much I loved the series. Some would say what you did wasn't completely original, but actually, it takes a very subtle touch. Like art. It's Good.

Also, props on the art of holding back, if you know what I'm implying. It can be tedious to find a balance between too much detail and too little. You landed somewhere in the middle, which leaves room for the imagination to create scenarios while staying within the bounds of the story itself.

My vote goes to Sozin, simply because his specialization is firebending, from the moment he first made a spark. Roku is the Avatar, but it's evident even in the set up that he has preferences and comfort zones.

Sweet set up. The parallel with prince of egypt was a nice touch anyway with Roku weakened and having become more reliant on diferent techniques than firebending I have to give it to Sozin.

Very good set-up, Nova. Not sure that Roku would just come charging into Sozin's stronghold alone without an army of his own, or if chi-blocking is specialized enough in the Avatar world to block out individual bending arts in an Avatar, but still, a very good story.

As for the match, Sozin may be a very good and powerful firebender in his own right, but IIRC, given time Avatars often became the best and strongest benders in the world at every element. And I think both Roku and Sozin are middle-aged to old men at the point their conflict came to a head, so they were both at their peak. Therefore, I'm not really sure Sozin would be better at firebending than Roku, but Roku's fatique and various injuries would surely help Sozin out at least a little.

And yes, Rob, Nova has caught you. What'cha gonna do? :P

Well, the Avatar State is an army, comprised of the power of hundreds if not thousands of avatars and you're right chi-blocking probably can't do that. It was just a way to try and limit Roku, otherwise this wouldn't even be a fight.

Hang out with Patrick, SSJRuss, and Shockwave, I guess. :P That's it, for Rank 1: 3.7 members? Thought there was more... Ah, well.

Nice set-up, Nova. But unlike the majority of site members, I never watched Avatar. At all. Wait, was that the one with the weird, blue aliens in a Pocahontas setting?:P

...You're saying you're not fond of the idea of being Will Smith, with a *vulgarity*ing awesome car, single, able to get a hot girl, and I'm stuck with Martin Lawrence, who's the guy who keeps Will in check, got a family, and is generally not in a good position as Will?

Da fuq.
