As crzykrdd already pointed out, the muggers took darkseid by surprise, while the cops took on thanos while he was fully aware of the situation. "Don't bring a knife(or a chain) to a gunfight." Thanos-coptor FTW! I remember Spidey Super Stories, it was done in conjunction with the Electric Company. I suppose we could easily have seen a Thanos story with Easy Reader or Paul the Gorilla.
