JR: Getting ready to call the next match here. Shang Tsung versus Mario!

Whiz: This is a very odd pairing. Who decided these brackets, JR?

JR: None of your god-damn-business, Whiz. Let's call the match.

Boomstick: And Mario comes out strong with an uppercut. What a slap in the face to the Mortal Kombat veteran!

Whiz: Wow. That sent him flying. Not a good way to start.

JR: He isn't down for long, back on his feet. Oh my a returning uppercut.

Boomstick: Combo with the flying skulls! Man, I love this show.

Uh, so my initial thought is that Shang Tsung has a mobility, training, skills, and power advantage. Mario is maybe faster at actually running, and seems to be stronger. Seems like Shang Tsung would be able to get a win just be playing hit and run, and then running in to finish Mario off once he's tired

Mario gets soulsucked as soon as the fight starts, I don't think Mario characters have ever dealt with something like that.

I'm not really convinced by that. I don't think Liu Kang, for example, has shown any specific feats of resisting soul sucking, and he has canonically beaten Shang Tsung before. Soulsucking, as far as I'm aware, has always been Shang Tsung's finishing move, not his opener. I could be wrong about this, if you have any feats to the contrary I'll be happy to admit I'm wrong, but any time I can think of that Shang Tsung has canonically used his soul sucking  power, it has been at the end of the fight

I think a good counter for that would be Mario's Cap. Or Cappy, if you will. He might be able to throw it at Shang Tsung and take over his body. Shang might be able to resist it, but I don't think we've ever seen anyone do that before.

As for stealing souls, I think Shang can use just a bit of it during a fight to then copy his form into his opponents. I'm not 100% on that, but that's how I remember it.

This is what I was thinking of exactly. Thank you for bringing it up while I was away.
