He's a very experienced teacher, and many of the furious five were previously hooligans before he recruited them, like Monkey. He's also not going to be at all intimidated by the inmates, and if any of them try to get physical with him, he can restrain them easily without doing any permanent damage. He's also shown to be very patient and good at working with people to find what motivates them specifically and crafting training around that.
