Agreed, this was common(ish) at the time. However I don't think either of these characters are typical of their kind - in terms of strength, nobility, sneakiness, fighting ability etc... In the climax of the 2016 Jungle Book he took on Baloo, Bagheera, and the entire wolf pack by himself in order to get at Mowgli.
